Understanding the Soul of Hindustani Classical Vocal Music
Dive into the art of Indian classical music with structured yet deeply soulful Khayal training. Our sessions focus on voice culture, raga clarity, and melodic improvisation—helping you understand both the structure and spirit of Hindustani vocal music. Learn from master vocalists trained in traditional guru-shishya parampara (teacher-disciple lineage), whether through in-person intensive courses in sacred Pushkar or online lessons accessible worldwide. From absolute beginners to advanced practitioners, we guide students through the transformative journey of Alaap, Bandish, Taan, Sargam, and the emotional expression (bhava) of each Raag.
What Is Raga & Khayal? (For Those New to Indian Classical Music)
What Is Raga?
A melodic framework (not just a scale) with specific rules for ascent, descent, and emphasis notes. Each raga evokes specific emotions—shringar (love), vairagya (detachment), shanti (peace), karuna (compassion).
Time-Associated: Morning ragas like Bhairav, evening ragas like Yaman, night ragas like Bageshri. Seasonal: Raag Malhaar for monsoon, Raag Basant for spring.
What Is Khayal?
The most popular form of Hindustani classical vocal performance. "Khayal" means "imagination"—emphasizing improvisation and creative expression within raga rules.
Structure: Two-part with Vilambit (slow tempo) and Drut (fast tempo) khayal. Combines fixed composition (bandish) with improvisation (alaap, taan, sargam).
The Khayal Performance Structure
Alaap
Wordless improvisation exploring the raga's character. Slow, meditative, establishes the mood.
Bandish
Fixed composition with lyrics (poetry set to melody and rhythm). The anchor of the performance.
Bol-bant
Playing with lyrics rhythmically, breaking words into syllables for percussion-like effect.
Sargam
Singing note names (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni) as improvisation within raga framework.
Taan
Fast melodic runs showcasing virtuosity, breath control, and mastery of raga patterns.
Layakari
Rhythmic play, syncopation, polyrhythms with tabla accompaniment creating excitement.

Student Success Stories
"I've been leading kirtan for 5 years but felt my singing was plateauing. After the 14-day intensive, I understand how to use ragas to create emotional journeys in kirtan. My community now requests specific ragas by name! The alaap techniques transformed my invocations. Vini ji showed me how Krishna bhajans naturally fit into Raag Yaman and Bhairavi—suddenly centuries of tradition made sense."
USA, Kirtan Leader & Yoga Teacher
"I teach 12 yoga classes per week and wanted to add live music instead of recorded tracks. The 30-day course gave me 5 ragas I now rotate through my classes. Students say the live tanpura + my raga singing creates deeper meditation than any recording. I've also started offering 'Raga & Yoga' workshops that sell out immediately. This training was a game-changer for my teaching."
Brazil, Yoga Teacher & Sound Healer
"As a flamenco guitarist, I always felt the Spanish-Indian connection but didn't know how to bridge it musically. After 3 months with Vini ji, I understand how ragas and flamenco palos share modal thinking. I now perform 'Raga Flamenco' fusion concerts where I play Raag Bhairavi on guitar with flamenco techniques—audiences are mesmerized. This training didn't dilute my flamenco; it deepened it."
Spain, Flamenco Guitarist & Fusion Artist
"I studied classical music in Mumbai for 3 years but felt I was just memorizing without understanding. The 3-month residency in Pushkar changed everything. Daily riyaaz with Vini ji, attending live mehfils, living in a temple town saturated with music—I finally understood what 'becoming one with the raga' means. I'm now preparing for All India Radio auditions with confidence."
Mumbai, Classical Music Student
"My dissertation is on guru-shishya parampara in North Indian music. Books can only tell you so much—I needed to experience it. The 30-day intensive was ethnographic goldmine. I documented daily lessons, attended classical concerts, interviewed senior musicians Vini ji connected me with. My dissertation committee said my fieldwork chapter is the strongest part. Can't imagine completing my PhD without this immersion."
USA, Ethnomusicology PhD Candidate
"Living in rural Australia, I never thought I could learn authentic Indian classical music. Weekly online lessons with Vini ji proved me wrong. In 8 months, I've learned 4 ragas and can perform 20-minute solo pieces. The recorded lessons let me practice daily. Next year I'm planning my first trip to India specifically to study in-person at Krishna Music School. Online learning works if you're committed!"

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior musical experience to start?
No! We accept absolute beginners with no prior music training. The foundation course starts with basic voice training, breathing exercises, and simple sargam practice. However, if you have prior musical experience (any style—Western, devotional, folk), it can accelerate your progress. We assess your level in the first session and customize the curriculum accordingly.
How is learning classical vocal different from learning an instrument?
Your voice IS the instrument—which means you can't separate yourself from it. Voice training requires understanding your unique vocal anatomy, breath capacity, and natural pitch. It's deeply personal and introspective. Unlike instruments you can put down, your voice reflects your physical, mental, and emotional state daily. Classical vocal training is as much about self-awareness as musical technique.
What if I can't come to Pushkar? Are online lessons as effective?
Online lessons are highly effective if you're disciplined! 70% of what you learn happens in daily self-practice (riyaaz), not just during lessons. With high-quality video/audio, we can see and hear you clearly for detailed feedback. You'll need: (1) Good internet connection, (2) Quiet space for practice, (3) Tanpura app or electronic tanpura, (4) Commitment to daily practice 45-90 mins. Many students start online, then come for in-person intensive later.
How long does it take to sing a raga properly?
Define "properly"! You can learn the basic structure of a simple raga (Yaman, Bhupali) in 2-3 weeks and sing a simple bandish. But to MASTER a raga—understanding its nuances, developing confident improvisation, expressing its emotional depth—takes 6-12 months of daily practice for that one raga. Classical musicians spend lifetime exploring 10-15 ragas deeply rather than learning 50 superficially.
What equipment/instruments do I need to practice at home?
Minimal! (1) Tanpura: Electronic tanpura ₹3,000-8,000 or smartphone tanpura app (many free options), (2) Recording device: Smartphone is fine for recording practice sessions, (3) Tabla app (optional): For practicing with rhythm (many free apps), (4) Notebook: For writing bandish lyrics and notations. That's it! Voice is your instrument—no expensive purchases required.
Can I learn if I'm "tone-deaf" or "can't sing"?
Almost everyone can learn! True "tone-deafness" (amusia) is rare (4% of population). Most people who think they can't sing simply haven't trained their voice. Like any muscle, your vocal cords can be strengthened and trained. Indian classical training specifically develops pitch accuracy through daily sargam practice. We've taught many students who thought they "couldn't sing"—it just takes patience and consistent practice.
What's the difference between learning Khayal vs. Bhajan/Kirtan?
Khayal is the classical form emphasizing improvisation within strict raga rules—it's about mastery of technique and raga grammar. Bhajan/Kirtan are devotional forms—simpler melodies, repetitive, emphasis on emotional devotion over technical virtuosity. However, learning Khayal ELEVATES your bhajan/kirtan singing dramatically! You'll have better voice control, pitch accuracy, breath support, and ability to add classical elements (alaap, taan) that make devotional singing more engaging.
Will you teach me Bollywood songs?
Not directly—that's not our focus. BUT, many Bollywood songs are based on classical ragas! Once you learn Raag Yaman, you'll recognize it in "Kabhi Kabhi," "Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo," etc. Once you know Raag Bhairavi, you'll hear it in "Jab Deep Jale Aana," "Hothon Se Chulo Tum," dozens more. Classical training gives you the foundation to understand, appreciate, and improve any genre—including Bollywood. Some students create fusion arrangements of Bollywood songs using classical techniques.
What is guru-shishya parampara and how does it work today?
Guru-shishya parampara is the traditional teacher-disciple lineage system where knowledge is transmitted orally, intimately, over many years. Historically, students lived with gurus for 10-20 years. Today, we adapt this: maintaining the oral tradition (learning by ear, not notation), one-on-one intensive instruction, emphasis on daily practice discipline, and cultural/philosophical context—but within modern formats (courses, online lessons, certificates). The spirit remains: deep relationship, personalized teaching, and lifelong connection between teacher and student.
Can I perform publicly after completing a course?
After 14-day intensive: You can perform simple 10-15 minute pieces at informal gatherings, kirtan/bhajan settings, yoga classes. After 30-day intensive: You can perform 20-30 minute solo sets at small concerts, cultural events, private functions. After 3-month residency: You're prepared for 45-60 minute formal classical concert (with continued practice). Public performance requires not just technique but confidence, stage presence, and understanding of concert etiquette—which we build progressively.
