Comprehensive Curriculum: Foundation to Mastery
Structured 10-session progression from absolute basics to confident singing—adaptable based on your starting level and goals.
Foundation Level (Sessions 1-5)
Building Blocks: Swaras, Breath, Alankars, First Raga, Simple Bhajan
Introduction to Indian Swaras

- Octaves: Mandra (lower), Madhya (middle), Taar (higher)—expanding vocal range systematically
- First Exercise: Sustained Sa note (breath control, pitch stability, tonal memory foundation)
Voice Culture & Breath Control
- Diaphragmatic Breathing: Proper breath support from abdomen (not shallow chest breathing)
- Pranayama for Singers: Anulom vilom, bhastrika adapted for vocal stamina building
- Vocal Warm-ups: Humming scales, lip trills, gentle sirens (protecting voice from strain)
- Posture: Sitting cross-legged vs standing—spinal alignment for optimal breath flow
Alankars & Paltas (Scale Exercises)
- What are Alankars? Decorative patterns training voice flexibility and note accuracy
- Basic Patterns: Sa Re Ga Re Sa, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Ma Ga Re Sa (foundational vocal exercises)
- Paltas (Variations): Speed variations, ascending/descending combinations, building agility
- Daily Routine: 15-20 min alankar practice (develops muscle memory for improvisation later)
Introduction to Raga Concept
- What is Raga? Melodic framework with specific note selection, mood, time association
- Raga vs Scale: Western scale = all notes equal; Raga = hierarchy (vadi/samvadi—king/queen notes)
- Time Theory: Morning ragas (Bhairav), Evening ragas (Yaman), Anytime ragas (Bhairavi)
- First Raga: Bhupali (5 notes, beginner-friendly evening raga—pentatonic simplicity)
Simple Bhajan (Devotional Song)
- Learn Complete Bhajan: "Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram" or "Om Namah Shivaya" (popular, accessible)
- Lyrics + Meaning: Understanding what you're singing (not just phonetic mimicry)
- Melody + Rhythm: Coordinating vocal melody with rhythmic cycle (taal awareness develops)
- Bhava (Expression): Singing with devotional feeling vs mechanical recitation—where soul lives
Intermediate Level (Sessions 6-10)

- Alaap Practice: Slow note-by-note exploration (traditional raga introduction method)
- Taan Patterns: Fast melodic runs showcasing raga's character and personality
- Simple Bandish: Short composition in Yaman (applying raga to structured song form)
Taal (Rhythm) for Singers
- Teentaal (16 Beats): Most common in devotional music, clap/wave patterns mastery
- Keharwa (8 Beats): Simpler cycle for folk bhajans, faster learning curve for beginners
- Singing in Taal: Coordinating vocal phrases with rhythmic cycle (sam—beat one—crucial)
- Practical Application: Sing bhajan in Teentaal while clapping taal (multi-tasking coordination)
Kirtan Singing Techniques
- Call-Response Structure: Lead vs chorus roles, creating participatory group energy
- Building Intensity: Starting slow meditative → gradually accelerating → ecstatic peak (traditional arc)
- Repetition Mastery: Singing same phrase 108 times without boredom (trance induction skill)
- Harmonium Self-Accompaniment: Basics of playing simple chords while singing (independence for leaders)
Mantra Chanting with Precision
- Sanskrit Pronunciation: Vowel clarity (A, Ā, I, Ī, U, Ū), consonant precision (dental vs retroflex)

- Popular Mantras: Gayatri Mantra, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Om Namah Shivaya (proper rendition)
- Breath-Aligned Chanting: Synchronizing mantra rhythm with natural breath cycle (meditative effect)
Performance Integration
- Mini Recital Preparation: Select 2-3 pieces (alaap, bhajan, kirtan) for showcase performance

Who Should Join: Student Profiles
Five primary student types—see yourself reflected, understand what you'll achieve with dedicated practice.
Absolute Beginners
What You Need: Just curiosity and willingness to practice 15-30 mins daily (no prior musical experience required—start from zero)
What You'll Achieve:
- Understand Indian music basics (swaras, raga concept, taal awareness—foundational knowledge)
- Sing 3-5 simple bhajans/kirtans confidently (performance-ready in safe supportive settings)
- Develop pitch accuracy, breath control, basic vocal technique (healthy singing foundation)
- Overcome fear of singing in front of others (confidence building through gradual exposure)
"52-year-old yoga teacher, never sang publicly (always lip-synced in kirtan!). After 10-session online course, I now confidently lead simple kirtans in my classes. Students are SHOCKED. Game-changer for my teaching."
Lisa M., California, USA
Kirtan Leaders / Yoga Teachers
What You Need: Already leading kirtans but want vocal technique refinement, raga depth, self-accompaniment skills (elevation not starting from scratch)
What You'll Achieve:
- Understand raga principles (elevate kirtan beyond chord-strumming—melodic sophistication)
- Develop vocal stamina (sing 60-90 min kirtans without strain—sustainable technique)
- Learn harmonium basics for self-accompaniment (independence from hired musicians—empowering)
- Improvisation within ragas (create fresh variations, not repeating same melody always—dynamic)
"Led kirtans 5 years but felt limited—same melodies, voice tired after 30 mins. 10-day Pushkar immersion transformed practice. Now I understand raga logic, play basic harmonium myself, have stamina I never imagined. Kirtans went from repetitive to dynamic."
Rohan P., Kirtan Leader, Goa
Classical Music Enthusiasts
What You Need: Interest in Hindustani classical, willing to commit to disciplined practice, patience for gradual learning (not instant gratification)
What You'll Achieve:
- Solid foundation in one raga (Yaman or Bhupali typically—deep understanding vs superficial)
- Understanding of classical structure (alaap, bandish, taan—traditional forms mastery)
- Alankar practice routine (building blocks for advanced learning—proper technical foundation)
- Pathway to finding gurukul-style guru if wanting deeper classical training (next steps clear)
"Indian-American born USA, always loved classical but never learned systematically. 10-session online course gave foundation I craved. Now I understand what I'm hearing when I listen to Pandit Jasraj! Feels accessible, not intimidating."

Spiritual Seekers
What You Need: Drawn to devotional music as spiritual practice, less concerned with performance, more with inner experience (sacred approach)
What You'll Achieve:
- Mantra chanting with correct pronunciation and devotional feeling (bhava—sacred precision)
- Understanding sacred sound principles (nada yoga, chakra resonance—esoteric dimensions)
- Personal daily practice routine (15-20 mins sustainable, meditative—spiritual discipline)
- Using voice as spiritual tool (not just entertainment—pathway to transcendence)
"Not 'musical' person—tone-deaf family joke. But drawn to kirtan at meditation retreats. 5-session package focused on mantra chanting (no performance pressure). Teacher taught: it's not about perfect pitch, it's about devotional intention. Liberating."
David S., Meditation Practitioner, UK
International Music Students
What You Need: Background in music (any genre), curious about Indian classical, willing to unlearn Western assumptions (open beginner's mind)
What You'll Achieve:
- Cross-cultural musical understanding (Indian vs Western music theory—paradigm shift)
- Ability to sing in microtones (quarter tones—mind-bending for Western-trained ears!)
- Raga improvisation basics (different from jazz—rule-bound freedom, paradoxical beauty)
- Appreciation for oral tradition vs notation dependency (memory, listening skills develop)
"Jazz vocalist from Germany, conservatory-trained. Indian classical broke my brain (in best way!). Microtones, raga rules, memorization—everything challenged assumptions. 14-day Pushkar immersion hardest and most rewarding musical experience. I now incorporate raga-inspired improvisation into jazz. Creative gold."
Anna W., Jazz Vocalist, Berlin
Teaching Methodology: How We Work
Oral Tradition (Guru-Shishya Parampara)
- Learn by ear, not sheet music (develops listening, memory—authentic traditional method)
- Teacher demonstrates phrase, student repeats (imitation → internalization—time-tested process)
- Gradual complexity (simple → intermediate → advanced, respecting natural learning pace)
- Emphasis on tonal memory over notation dependency (deep embodied learning vs intellectual)
Personalized Attention
- Max 8 students per workshop (often 1-on-1 or 2-4 small groups—individual focus guaranteed)
- Individual voice assessment (unique vocal strengths/challenges identified—no cookie-cutter approach)
- Custom practice routines (not one-size-fits-all—designed for YOUR voice, schedule, goals)
- Safe learning space (no judgment, mistakes celebrated as learning—supportive environment)
Devotional Context
- Not purely technical training (understand cultural/spiritual significance—music as sacred practice)
- Bhava (emotional expression) equally emphasized as technique (heart + skill = complete singing)
- Sacred setting (Pushkar temple courtyard for in-person—atmosphere enhances learning)
- Music as spiritual path (nada yoga principles, devotional surrender—transcendent dimension)
Practical Application
- Every session includes performance practice (singing in front of others builds confidence gradually)
- Recording assignments (listen to own voice—accelerates learning through self-awareness)
- Real-world preparation (leading kirtan, singing bhajan at gathering, temple performances)
- Feedback loops (teacher + peer feedback + self-reflection = rapid improvement)

Frequently Asked Questions
I'm tone-deaf / can't sing. Can I still learn?
95% of "tone-deafness" is lack of training, not biological inability! With practice, almost everyone develops pitch accuracy. We've taught many students who thought they "couldn't sing"—within 5-10 sessions, noticeable improvement. Devotional singing especially forgiving—intention and bhava (feeling) matter more than perfect pitch. Even if you struggle with pitch, you CAN learn to chant mantras with correct pronunciation and devotional expression (which is what matters spiritually). Give yourself chance before deciding you "can't."
Do I need to know Hindi or Sanskrit?
Absolutely NOT required! We teach phonetically with romanized pronunciation guides. Understanding lyrics helps deepen connection but isn't mandatory initially. Many international students learn purely phonetically first, add meaning understanding later (works perfectly fine). Sanskrit vowels/consonants explained in detail with practice—anyone can learn with repetition. For devotional singing, the FEELING (bhava) matters more than linguistic fluency. Even mispronunciation with devotion is better than perfect pronunciation without heart.
How much daily practice is required?
Minimum 15-20 mins daily for noticeable progress. Ideal 30-45 mins if serious about improvement. Even 10 mins better than nothing (consistency matters!). Consistency matters MORE than duration—daily 15 mins beats once-weekly 2 hours (muscle memory, tonal memory develop through frequency). We design realistic routines fitting YOUR actual schedule (not idealistic plans you won't follow). Be honest about your time, and we'll create sustainable practice you'll actually do.
Can children join workshops?
Ages 8+ welcome (younger need parental participation alongside them). Indian classical singing excellent for children—develops discipline, memory, breath control, concentration, cultural connection. We adjust teaching pace for kids (shorter attention spans, more games/fun elements). Many students start young (8-12), continue for years into adulthood (builds lifelong musical foundation). Children often learn FASTER than adults (less self-consciousness, more natural mimicry, open ears). Highly recommended if child shows interest!
What equipment needed for online sessions?
Basic: Stable internet, Zoom/Google Meet capable device (laptop/tablet/phone), quiet space without background noise, headphones/earbuds (better sound quality than device speakers, reduces echo). Optional but helpful: Portable tanpura app on phone (creates drone—many free options like iTanpura, Tanpura Droid), external microphone for better audio (not required but improves teacher's ability to hear your pitch accurately). That's it—no expensive equipment needed!
Will I be able to lead kirtans after workshop?
Depends on duration and prior experience. 5-session package: Gives basics for leading SIMPLE kirtans confidently (Om Namah Shivaya, Hare Krishna—repetitive, easy). 10-session course OR Pushkar immersion: Prepares you well for leading 30-60 min kirtans with variety, energy modulation, crowd engagement. Ongoing weekly sessions: Ideal for continuous skill building (most sustainable path). Realistic timeline: 3-6 months weekly practice to lead 30-min kirtan confidently without insecurity. 6-12 months for 60-90 min kirtans with sophistication.
Online vs in-person (Pushkar)—which is better?
Both effective for different reasons:
Online Advantages: Convenient (no travel), affordable (no accommodation costs), accessible globally (anyone anywhere), flexible scheduling (fit your calendar), can record/rewatch (reinforcement learning), comfortable home environment (less intimidating).
In-Person (Pushkar) Advantages: Immersive (no distractions, total focus), cultural context deepens learning (temple atmosphere, local music scene), teacher can physically correct posture (hands-on guidance), intensive pace accelerates progress (daily sessions compound), peer bonding (group energy uplifts), sacred atmosphere (temple courtyard enhances devotional dimension).
Our Recommendation: Start online to test fit and build basics (3-6 months). Then do Pushkar immersion for deepening (7-14 days intensive). Many students follow this path successfully—gets best of both worlds!
I have shy/quiet voice. Can I learn to project?
YES! Vocal projection is TECHNIQUE, not innate trait. Through proper breath support (diaphragmatic breathing), posture alignment, and resonance training, even quiet voices gain significant projection. We teach sustainable healthy projection (not yelling/straining which damages voice). Many shy-voiced students surprised by their own volume capacity after 5-10 sessions once they learn proper technique. Indian classical training specifically focuses on this—singing over harmonium/tabla requires strong projection, so it's built into curriculum. Your natural voice will get louder, clearer, and more resonant with practice.
Can I learn to sing AND play harmonium together?
Yes, but it's ADVANCED skill requiring patience. Timeline: First 10-20 sessions: Focus purely on vocal training (developing pitch accuracy, breath control, raga understanding). Then parallel harmonium practice: Learn basic chords separately (takes 5-10 sessions to play simple accompaniment). Then integration: Combine singing + playing (coordination takes 10-20 sessions to feel natural). Realistic total timeline: 6-12 months weekly practice for basic self-accompaniment. It's DOABLE but requires commitment. We guide step-by-step (not overwhelming you by trying to learn both simultaneously at start—recipe for frustration!).
What if I want to continue after workshop ends?
We ENCOURAGE ongoing learning (music is lifelong journey, not destination). Options: (1) Weekly online sessions: Continue at your own pace indefinitely (most sustainable for long-term growth). (2) Return for another intensive: Come back to Pushkar for 7-14 days annually (deepening through periodic immersion). (3) Hybrid approach: Monthly online sessions + annual Pushkar visit (balance of consistency + intensity). (4) Lifetime WhatsApp support: All 10-session graduates get ongoing Q&A access (ask questions anytime between sessions). We want to support your ENTIRE musical journey, not just extract one workshop fee and disappear. You're joining a COMMUNITY, not just taking a course.
